Mount Oxford

This was planned as a Mt Oxford – Ashley Saddle round trip, but the option of a return down the fence-line was canned at lunchtime. The forecast was for a moderate nor-wester which is what we got, in variable, overcast conditions. Leaving Placemakers, Cranford St at 7.30am we were walking from the car-park by 8.25am. John Robinson had arranged to meet us there. His car was there but no John. Turned out, he had gone up the fence-line route and returned the same way, so we didn’t meet.

Lacking fitness, I managed the tramp up with effort. I’m sure the others walked behind me in sympathy rather than ahead, leaving me behind. Further up, we were progressively passed by a CTC group, plus others, including a trim, lovely young corgi dog—with owner of course. Stopping just down from the top, we had lunch out of the wind, then up to the top for the record. As we descended there were still numbers of people going up—not quite like Harry Ell on a Sunday morning but very busy.

Back to the cars at 3.45pm in warm weather, we drove out to Oxford to closed cafes as expected, but made do with coffee at the bar in the main street, supplemented by cookies, thanks to Kathryn. So, an enjoyable day out.
